The Opio Valbonne golf course lies within a 220-hectare estate between the mountains and the Mediterranean, just 20 minutes from the Nice-Côte d’Azur airport.
Sheltered from wind, warmed by the sun, the 18-hole course is shaped by discreet hills, dotted with age-old trees and, surprisingly, a Gallo-Roman aqueduct. The design makes the most of lavish vegetation, including multiple species of trees.
Still spry and sprightly at 50
Designed by Donald Harradine in 1966, making it one of the oldest courses on the Côte d’Azur, the course greens were renovated in 2002, and the watering system in 2012. That year, the back 9 was modified with the creation of a signature hole, the 18, a par 3 overlooking the restaurant terrace. Course characteristics: The front 9 requires a good mastery of approach shots and irons. The back 9 demands long and regular woods. The club has a 30-station driving range, 10 covered tees, as well as a training bunker, a putting green, and a pitching green.
Learning and sharing
To pave the way for the future, the Opio Valbonne golf course trains young players at its academy, which is located on the course and offers golf instruction, and also has tennis lessons available using the estate’s tennis court.
Opio Valbonne has a marvelous collaborative relationship with its neighbor, La Grande Bastide golf course: When one of the courses is hosting an event, the other remains open to non-competitors to ensure all golfers can play to their hearts’ content. A distinct advantage with the handful of events scheduled throughout the year.
Golf and gastronomy
This past April 17, for the second time on this course and in collaboration with the staff of the Château de la Bégude, the Opio Valbonne golf course hosted a new kind of event: Le Trophée des Chefs, a combination of golf and gastronomy. More than 70 players in teams of two challenged each other on the course’s back 9. At each hole, a chef cooked an amuse-bouche, prepared on site. Once the competition was over and the prizes distributed, those in attendance enjoyed a delicious buffet. Proof that lifestyle and golf are a perfect combination!
