A few kilometers above Grasse, the Claux Amic golf course feels utterly like a mountain retreat. And a place where golfers might have some surprising encounters.
On a former 19th-century private hunting domain, encircled by a stone wall, the Claux Amic feels sheltered from civilization – a peaceful, verdant expanse that is nonetheless just ten minutes from Grasse. “We’re in the hills of the backcountry, at about 500 meters’ altitude. The surroundings are verdant and natural, and that’s why golfers come here. It’s not uncommon to see the deer that live on the property. They know they have nothing to fear here,” explains Isabelle Leclercq, Director of the Claux Amic since 2013.
A technical and tactical course
This private estate, then the property of a Japanese owner, was transformed in 1992 by the French golf-course architect Jean-Pascal Fourès, who has about twenty golf courses to his credit. In 1998, the Claux Amic was bought by the Contini family, who already owned the Château de Taulane and its golf course in the hills of the Var. Then, after a major renovation of much of the property, the course and club house reopened to visitors in 2013. “It’s a fairly technical course, with narrow fairways, hilly greens, challenging undergrowth where you can easily go astray, generous banking, and a lot of sand. A player must stay humble on this course and leave the driver in the bag. The course is more about tactics and technique than sheer power. But it’s a wonderful course to experience on foot – not too long, and a beautiful walk.” With a signature hole, the Number 3, offering a dramatic view overlooking the Bay of Cannes and the Iles des Lérins.
A new and improved club
At the time of this writing, the club had 90 members, mainly from the region, who come to this 51-hectare spread for a breath of fresh air.
“We really want to breathe new life into the club, giving it soul again. So we hold numerous events year round to encourage people to discover, or rediscover, the Claux Amic and all our new infrastructures. We feel that people really want that, even need it.” The club has a highly motivated, very active, 18-member women’s team that catalyzes this synergy.
